Consequent to the stampede at the privately-managed Sri Karuppanaswamy Temple at Muthayampalayam, the district administration has sought a report from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments to determine if the shrine had been constructed with permission.
Speaking to reporters at the temple after inspecting it, Collector S. Sivarasu said a report from the HR & CE department has been sought to initiate further action after detailed inquiry.
Although the shrine had been constructed on a private site, permission of HR & CE was a requisite. While stating that the temple had been constructed without permission, he acknowledged that a claim has been made on the contrary. Nevertheless, a report from HR & CE would be obtained.
Since a large number of devotees visit the temple, special buses were operated for their convenience, the Collector said.
The event had been organised for a decade.
The wooden barricades had been established properly. The stampede had occurred when the devotees standing behind started pushing forward fearing the coins would be exhausted. The event was stopped following the stampede, he said.
