The Children’s Traffic Park at the Old Collector’s office here will sport a new look in the next six months with a slew of additional features.
The traffic park, which has been functioning for the past 25 years to train and drive home the importance of adherence of traffic rule and road safety messages to children, is to be improved under Self-Sufficiency Scheme. The proposed facilities include an amphitheatre, safety driving centre, a play field and stainless steel retro-reflective traffic signboards. District Rural Development Agency will install these facilities at a cost of ₹ 1.25 crore.
The new facilities were necessitated after it was found that the park lacked facilities to impart theoretical and practical sessions to children on road rules and safety messages.
Kerb wall with painting, provision of LED light fittings and road barricades will also be put in place inside the park.
The foundation stone laying ceremony for the park improvement work was held on Wednesday. Tourism Minister Vellamandi N. Natarajan, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Minister S. Valarmathi, MP P. Kumar, Collector K. Rajamani, Commissioner of Police A. Amalraj and Prabhu Nagaraj, vice-president (Brand and Communications), Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, and officials from the police and district administration participated.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner of Police said along with enforcement of road rules, educating people, especially the young ones, on traffic rules was of paramount importance.
Mr. Prabhu Nagaraj said their company had trained nearly one lakh children at the Children's Traffic Park in Coimbatore in the last one year alone.
Safety instructors from the Honda would impart theoretical knowledge and practical experience to children at the Tiruchi traffic park. It would be a fun-with-learning approach, he said.
