Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai, and Institute of Standards Engineers (IES), Chennai, celebrated World Standards Day here on Friday.

Srinivasan Sundarrajan, Director, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, delivered the key note address at a function organised to mark the occasion. Other guest speakers included S. Dharmalingam, General Manager, BHEL, Tiruchi; V. Ganesan, Senior Vice-President (Operations), Chettinad Cement Corporation Limited, Ariyalur; and G. Shanmuganathan, Director, MSME Testing Centre, Chennai.

On this day in 1946, delegates from 25 countries first gathered in London and decided to establish an international organisation focussing on international standardisation. Since then, members of IEC (International Electro-technical Commission), ISO, and ITU (International Telecommunication Union) have been celebrating World Standards Day to pay tribute to the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as International Standards.

BIS represents the Geneva-headquartered International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) comprising representatives from national standards bodies of various countries.
