BHEL determined its level of preparedness to respond to emergency situations by carrying out a mock drill at its Seamless Steel Tube Plant (SSTP), recently.

The drill was meant to tackle situations arising out of gas leak and fire in the LPG yard in SSTP.

The ‘leak from the LPG tank' was identified instantly by the detector at the control room. Instantly, the water sprinkler system was activated and fire fighting group from SSTP and Heavy Pressure Boiler Plant rushed to the spot. Fire was prevented by spraying water in high velocity over the tank area.

All employees working at SSTP were alerted and assembled at the safe assembly point. Firemen from Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue services, Ordnance Factory, Heavy Alloy Penetration Plant (HAPP) and BHEL participated in the mock drill organised under the joint supervision of S. Karunakaran, General Manager, SSTP & Site Controller; K Balakumaran, Additional General Manager (AGM), SSTP & Incident Controller; and E Nirmalraj, Chief Security Officer & Emergency Officer. V. Selvaraju, Joint Chief Inspector of Factories; R Rajasekaran Inspector of Factories; A. Kavitha, Assistant Inspector of Factories; S. Elango Inspector of Factories, Tiruchi, and senior officials of BHEL and district administration witnessed the exercise.
