Poor condition of interior roads in Annamalai Nagar has been an irksome factor for long, residents complain.

Relaying works planned in 2017 at a cost of ₹12 crore were confined only to arterial stretches and the damaged interior roads keep worsening, giving a tough time to motorists, the residents point out.

Deep potholes and battered stretches are a common sight in many area. Although complaints have been growing louder, hardly any attempt has been made to relay these roads or at least carry out patch work, rue residents. “I have lived in Annamalai Nagar for the last 10 years. Tar road was laid eight years ago, after which there has been no maintenance,” said Sowmya, a resident.

These interior roads in Annamalai Nagar are used mostly by a private college and a hospital. “The students travelling in the college buses and patients being taken in ambulances face the discomfort on a daily basis,” another resident said.

“There have been several incidences of two-wheelers falling into potholes. We have written several complaints to the officials concerned but there has been no response,” said a student.

Officials, however, maintain that they have drafted a plan and are going to conduct patchwork in a systematic manner. N. Ravichandran, Corporation Commissioner, said: “Periodic maintenance is being done. There were issues in maintaining roads as ongoing underground drainage (UGD) works were being undertaken. We will be relaying roads shortly in residential areas where UGD pipelines have been laid.”
