An ancient burial urn and some grave pottery have been unearthed from a burial ground at Madakudi near Lalgudi in Tiruchi by locals.

The urn, measuring about four feet in height and three feet in width, three pots (grave pottery) and a stand, found inside the urn, were unearthed intact. The discovery was made after some locals became curious when the ground caved in at the burial area following the rains over the past few days. They alerted the Revenue officials and the site was dug up on Saturday in the presence of C.Paneerselvam, Revenue Inspector, and Thavasumani, Village Administrative Officer.

The urn and the pottery were recovered and handed over to the VAO for safe keeping. District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said she would ask experts to take a look at the urn.

K.Rajan, Professor of History, Pondicherry University, on examining the photograph of the urn, told The Hindu that it appeared to be an early historic one. It would be difficult to date the find without examining the associate pottery, he observed.

R.Kalaikkovan, Director, Dr.Rajamanickkanar Historical Research Centre, Tiruchi, said the urn could be a megalithic urn as one such had been discovered near Lalgudi some years ago.
