Consequent to the opening of the Amaravathi dam to discharge excess inflow for the second time within a month, Karur Collector T. Anbalagan on Thursday issued a fresh flood warning to the people living along the Amaravathi dam.
He said that he had received inputs that entire inflow into the Amaravathi dam, which had reached to its capacity, have been discharged into the Amaravathi river.
It stood at 3,000 cusecs on Thursday evening.
The water was expected to reach Karur on Friday. After the release of water for irrigation in the upper reaches, it was estimated that 1500 to 1800 cusecs would be realised at Karur.
Hence, the people living along the riverfront of the Amaravathi and low-lying areas have been asked to move to safer places. Officials of various departments including Public Works Department, Revenue, Police, Fire and Rescue Services personnel have been alerted.
Mr. Anbalagan said that the water would be carried to fill up system tanks and other water bodies in the district.
Similarly, the Collector said that the inflow into the Cauvery was likely to touch beyond 50,000 cusecs in one or two days due to the heavy inflow into Mettur dam.
Precautionary measures would be in place to prevent untoward incidents. About 20,000 cusecs was realised at Mayanur barrage on Thursday.
