Hundreds of picnickers were seen at various tourist spots across Thanjavur district on the occasion of Kaanum Pongal on Monday. Despite lack of water in River Cauvery, the people flocked to the banks of the river to celebrate the occasion.
The famous Sivaganga Park in Thanjavur was teeming with visitors right from the morning while the adjacent Big Temple also had very many visitors during the day.
Several spots along the course of the Cauvery between Grand Anicut and Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district, picnickers were seen enjoying to the hilt. At Grand Anicut, tourists from Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts came in large numbers and platform vendors had a field day selling their wares in double quick a time.
The new expansive park and Karikalan Memorial were full of visitors and the whole area was filled with colour.
In Thanjavur apart from the Big Temple and Sivaganga Park, people visited various temples in the town including the Punnainallur Sri Mariamman temple as also tourist spots such as Rajarajan Manimanadapam, Palace Complex, while in Kumbakonam people thronged temples as well as Cauvery banks.
In Tiruvarur district, hundreds of people visited Sri Tyagaraja Swamy temple and the Muthupettai mangrove forests to spend the day.
In Nagapattinam district, Poompuhar, Velankanni and Vedaranyam bird sanctuary as also other coastal areas attracted a lot of tourists during the day. Police had made special arrangements for ensuring safety and security of the tourists.
