Implementation of welfare schemes tops Chief Minister's priority list: Union Minister

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi accords priority for effectively implementing various welfare schemes including the distribution of free colour television sets, CM's health insurance scheme for life saving treatments, Kalaignar housing scheme and distribution of rice at one rupee per kg through the public distribution system in Tamil Nadu, said A. Raja, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, on Monday.

The Minister who inaugurated the new school building at the Government high school in Karaikurichi village in T.Pazhur block in Ariyalur district, also distributed about 4,000 free colour television sets to the people of Vilandai and Karaikurichi Panchayats. On distributing welfare assistance like old age pension, free house site pattas, marriage assistance, to more than one hundred beneficiaries, he said that the Chief Minister had introduced several unique welfare schemes for the first time in the country.

Mr. Raja pointed out that the Chief Minister's health insurance scheme had been benefiting lakhs of poor people to get free treatment up to Rs.1 lakh for various ailmentsThe minister said that under the Kalaignar Housing scheme, about 54,000 huts had been enumerated for providing free permanent houses in Ariyalur district.

Collector T.Abraham who presided over the function explained in detail the various welfare schemes implemented in the district and also the development works taken up under various schemes.
