Awareness programme on conservation of energy

The role of the student community in achieving energy efficiency in households and institutions were highlighted at a seminar on ‘Action Plan for Energy Efficiency’ organised by the Technical Training and Development Centre of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at the Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, Teppakulam, in the City on Tuesday.

The students were briefed about basic rules to be followed towards power conservation and electrical safety. Speaking on the occasion, F.X. Mary Magdalin Princy, Senior Manager, Technical Training and Development Centre, TNEB, appealed to the students to be aware of energy saving techniques and also sensitise their parents and peers on the need to conserve energy. Students should prevail upon their parents to go in only for household appliances which have been rated for energy efficiency. Use of standard equipment and quality wiring would greatly help improve energy efficiency.

The students were given tips on proper operation of refrigerators, air conditioners, televisions, household lighting and other household appliances. She also appealed to the students to stagger the use of water motors and other household equipments to reduce the peak hour demand between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

N. Gayathri and Vaidya Raman, Assistant Engineers, stressed on safety procedures and ways to prevent accidents.

A quiz programme on energy conservation and non-conventional energy sources was conducted for the students. Nearly 100 standard IX students took part in the quiz. M. Dinesh Kumar, K. Mohammed Shafi and G.G. Srivishnuvardhan bagged the first three prizes respectively. M. Anburaj, Headmaster, Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, spoke.
