A 11-year old girl died of suspected dengue fever at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital here on Sunday.

G. Brinda, hailing from Malligaipuram in Thennur, was studying in Class V in a private school. She was running high temperature and having body ache for the last six days. Initially, she was treated as an outpatient at a private clinic. Since her condition turned unstable, she was admitted to the GH, where she died.

Platelet count

M.K. Muralidharan, the hospital Dean, told The Hindu that the patient was in a state of shock when she was admitted on Saturday morning. Her platelet count was very low, warranting immediate blood transfusion.

However, she did not respond to the treatment.

Asked if she died of dengue, he said blood sample had been sent for investigation. Advising against self medication, Mr. Muralidharan said the patients should be treated at the early stage.

Fever cases on the rise

Meanwhile, the number of fever cases was on the rise in the district for the last few days. At least four persons, admitted to the MGMGH, were tested positive for dengue. Four more persons with the dengue fever had been admitted to a private hospital in the city.

Dr. S. Srinivas of Vijaya hospital in Thillai Nagar said there was a sudden rise in fever cases. Some hospitals had been flooded with fever patients, particularly children and elders.
