Yatri Nivas, the lodging and boarding facility for tourists under Kerala Tourism at Thycaud here, is to be upgraded at a cost of Rs.1.62 crore.

The renovation, the second since 2008, is being taken up as the building, with leaky roofs and non-functional air-conditioners, is in no position to be rented out to tourists. The government has given administrative sanction for the upgrade of the facility.

The work is to be executed by the Steel Industries Limited Kerala in six months. The Public Works Department carried out a detailed inspection of the building and gave a report that urgent repairs were needed.

Opened in 1991

Yatri Nivas was opened by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) in 1991 to provide affordable and quality accommodation to tourists. The corporate office of the KTDC also functioned here for some time before moving to Mascot Square.

The building was renovated at a cost of Rs.53 lakh in 2008. Later, Kerala Tourism took over the property from the KTDC. There are 30 double bedrooms, nine of them air-conditioned.
