Toddler dies after consuming rat poison

A two-and-a-half-year-old boy, who accidentally consumed rat poison at his home at Kariyil near Kazhakuttam on May 29, breathed his last while under treatment at the SAT Hospital here on Sunday.

According to the Kazhakuttam police, Kasinathan, son of Shaiju and Tushara, was playing in the living room of the house around 10 a.m. on May 29 when he could have found the rat poison and consumed it. It was in the form of a cake and was kept on a windowsill. His mother came to know of it a little later when she was about to feed him and saw the remnants of the cake on his hands and face. He was rushed to a private hospital at Kazhakuttam from where he was shifted to the SAT Hospital.

He was under treatment but died at 6.10 a.m. on Sunday, the police said, adding that the body had been handed over to the family after an autopsy at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
