The 350-odd Plus One students joining Karthika Thirunal Vocational and Higher Secondary School, Manacaud, were welcomed with ink pens on Thursday in keeping with the State government’s thrust on green protocol in educational institutions.

While new students last year received saplings as part of the school’s Karthika Thanal initiative, this year the school decided to go for ink pens in a bid to reduce the use of plastic refill pens which are use-and-throw and inspire the students to shift to ink pens.

Support

Karthika Thanal, started last year, aims at equipping the girls to become a support for their family and society.

Sreevarahom ward councillor R. Mini who inaugurated the function said this was a turning point in the lives of girl students, and parents should be actively involved in all activities of the school.

They should also closely follow the directions and guidance from the school, she said.

Poet and ViCTERS channel Director Murugan Kattakada inaugurated the distribution of ink pens to the new students and top scorers in the SSLC and Plus Two examinations.

In his address, Mr. Kattakada said the new students were reaching the school when the public education sector in the State was seeing new energy and revival.

Parents should not thrust their choice of subjects on their wards.

Parents’ responsibility did not end with admitting their children to schools.

With students passing through physical, emotional, and mental uncertainties, parents should exercise utmost care to become part of the education process, which involved students, teachers, parents, and society.

Any failure on the part of any of these would adversely affect the future of the students, he said.

Outgoing Principal M.R. Satheesh Chandran in his welcome speech said the student strength in the school had been increasing each year.

Moreover, its success rate in the Plus Two examinations had increased from 89 per cent in 2013 to 95 per cent this year.

The number of A+ grade too had increased from 14 last year to 21 this year. All this had been possible owing to concerted efforts.

PTA president Manikandan who presided over the function said the school had been selected to be transformed into high-tech in the Thiruvananthapuram Assembly constituency, and a project for ₹21.4 lakh had been drawn up for this.

Higher Secondary School new Principal Ajith Kumar S., Vocational Higher Secondary School Principal Jotilla Joys, High School Headmaster Rajendran were present on the occasion.
