May 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:07 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The alcohol policy of Indian Railways issued in 2001 says that sobriety test is a mandatory requirement for staff running trains and it clearly mentions different actions to be taken on getting a positive result.

In case of alcohol content of less than 20mg/100ml of blood, a person will not be allowed for duty and if it is between 21 and 40 mg/100ml of blood, a minor penalty will be issued. If the alcohol content is between 41 and 70 mg/100ml of blood, a major penalty will be issued, and those with more than 71mg/100ml of blood will be issued a major penalty involving reversion from safety wing.

The third time irrespective of the alcohol content, a person will be given major penalty involving reversion from the safety category.

If a person shows reluctance to undergo the test, he shall be deemed to be under the influence of alcohol.
