The city’s sewerage network, including that of the coastal areas, will shortly be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.52 crore, Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar has said. In the first phase, Rs.10.19 crore would be spent on upgrading the sewerage network at Pettah, Chakka, Palkulangara, Perunthanni, and Kadakampalli.
He was speaking after launching a scheme to renovate the sewerage system at Punnapuram here. The second phase of the renovation scheme would cover areas such as Valitathura, Vallakkadavu, Beemapalli, Shanghumughom, Vettukad, and Kannanthura. Once the proposed 107 mld sewage treatment plant came online at Valiathura, the sewerage system in all these areas would stabilise, he said.
The government would put in place a drinking water scheme for the capital city under the JNNURM scheme, the outlay for which would be Rs.82 crore.
A meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on September 28 would take a final call on a Rs.258-crore sewerage project under the JNNURM scheme.
Preliminary work on a project designed to get drinking water from sea water at Vettukad had been initiated. The feasibility study and a subsequent detailed project report would be readied shortly. Work on the Museum-LMS drinking water pipeline under the JICA scheme would begin shortly. Once this became operational 20 mld additional water would flow to the coastal areas of the capital city, Mr. Sivakumar said.
