The Ministry of Urban Affairs has sanctioned a sum of Rs.1.96 crore to the city Corporation for preliminary work to modernise the slaughterhouse at Kunnukuzhy.

S. Pushpalatha, chairperson of the standing committee for Health, said the civic body had started work to modernise the slaughterhouse. Six firms had responded to the expression of interest floated by the Suchitwa Mission to select a firm for preparing a detailed project report. A technical committee constituted by the civic body would soon shortlist the firm, she said.

The civic body, she said, was considering sending a team to study the slaughterhouse managed by the Brahmagiri Development Society at Manjadi, near Sulthan Bathery.

The plan was to modernise the abattoir with an effluent treatment plant, bio-fertilizer unit, biogas plant, and meat processing unit.
