Ridding beaches of garbage

March 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:08 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Environmentalist Foundation of India has launched a beach clean-up from Veli to Vizhinjam.

The initiative, to be taken up over the next six months, involves removing non-degradable polythene, rubber, thermocol, and hazardous waste from beaches with the support of volunteers.

70 volunteers do the tidying-up job

In the first phase, the beach in Veli village was cleaned on Saturday morning with nearly 70 volunteers from the foundation and educational institutions and sanitation workers of the city Corporation. Large amounts of plastic wrappers, diapers, abandoned footwear, syringes, and more were removed.

A community-based conservation model with permission from government authorities, the campaign is aimed at driving home the message of the need to conserve beach habitats that are critical for nesting sea turtles and other life forms. The clean-up will continue over the coming weekends.
