Rains unlikely to put a damper on Anantha

June 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:46 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The district administration has said that the ongoing flood mitigation drive Operation Anantha is unlikely to be affected by the monsoon.

Official sources said that while construction work would have to be put on hold during the period, other work, including removal of encroachments over canals, would continue.

Meanwhile, work on the Kariyilathode canal is expected to be wound up in another two days.

An official said that though Friday’s heavy downpour had slowed down the work, considerable progress had been made in clearing encroachments over the 6-km canal.

At Attakulangara

The cleaning of drains at Attakulangara to improve stormwater flow from the Karimadom pond to the Thekkenkara canal is also under way.

The authorities had dug up the side of the bypass road a few days ago.

With the onset of the monsoon, the authorities are likely to persist with single-lane traffic along the other side of the road for the time being. They will also be required to demolish a homoeo dispensary and a badminton court that have been found to encroach on a drainage line.

Canal work by Railways

The official said Railways were expected to begin work on the proposed canal under the Thampanoor railway line next week.
