Over 170 vie for title in chess contest

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta schools take part in tournament

The first, second and third prize winners of the The Hindu in School Chess Competition 2018 with chief guest Raj Mohan, chairman, Saraswathi Vidyalaya, in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

The first, second and third prize winners of the The Hindu in School Chess Competition 2018 with chief guest Raj Mohan, chairman, Saraswathi Vidyalaya, in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

The Hindu in School Chess competition concluded at the Saraswathi Vidyalaya School here on Friday. More than 170 students from schools in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts participated in the contest. Prizes were distributed to the winners at the closing ceremony.

Winners

Abhinag N. of BJSM VHSS Kollam with 4.5 points topped the Under-15 Open category and Giridhar Raj from Lords Public School came second with 4 points.

Vishnu Menon of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, secured 4.5 points and topped the Under-13 Open category followed by Advaith R. of Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan with 4 points.

In the Under-11 category, Ajin Raj of SKV UPS, Kollam, with 5 points emerged first, followed by Somanshu Saha of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya with 4 points. Rishikesh S.A. from ACM School won the first prize in the Under-9 category and Sree Hari S. of SSRVM School came second. In all Open categories, seven consolidation prizes were given.

The Hindu in School Chess competition was sponsored by Camlin Kokuyo and powered by Thyrocare. The venue was sponsored by Saraswathi Vidyalaya School and snacks by Mr. Cakes.

Shaji P.M., Senior National Arbiter, was the Chief Arbiter for the event along with Rajendran Achari as deputy arbiter. G. Rajamohan, chairman of Saraswathi Vidyalaya School, was the guest of honour. Anupama M. Sreekumar of Carmel GHSS was felicitated for her achievements in the National Championship Under-9 category and Commonwealth Under-10 category.
