The City police on Friday arrested a 35-year-old man for alleged possession of 30 kg of hashish oil.
The accused was identified as Aji of Muniyara in Idukki. Following a tip-off received by the Narcotic Cell, Aji was caught when he arrived at the Pettah railway station on a train. The police said the contraband was recovered from a bag. His arrest was recorded at the Pettah police station.
Valued at ₹30 crore
District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) P. Prakash said the seizure was the largest to be recorded in the State in terms of hashish oil smuggling. The contraband is expected to be worth around ₹30 crore in the black market.
Two held earlier
The accused had come under the police scanner following the arrest of two Idukki natives at Golf Links, near Kowdiar, allegedly with 10 kg of ganja, two weeks ago. The duo told the police that Aji used to supply them with the contraband.
Assistant Commissioner (Narcotic Cell) Sheen Tharayil said the accused used to source the contraband in large quantities from gangs that operated in Sileru, a village considered a hotbed of ganja trade in Andhra Pradesh. Aji purportedly stored the contraband in Palakkad from where he used to smuggle them by trains.
The accused, who will be produced at the court on Saturday, will be taken under police custody for collecting further evidence.
