Students should choose their course for higher studies based on their aptitude, career guidance expert B.S. Warrier has said. He was addressing students and parents who gathered at the Carmel convention centre here on Friday as part of the The Hindu -EDGE Education Expo 2018.
“Most of our children have great aspirations. But they lack long-term planning. A course’s worthiness is dependent on the individual. A course which is suitable for one might not be suitable for another. It depends on various factors like taste, learning ability, chances of quick employability and financial capability. Most importantly, it depends on the student’s aptitude,” said Mr. Warrier at the special session on choosing the right career.
He said parents were at times forcing students to choose courses they were unlikely to excel in. A criterion for choosing a job should also be the satisfaction it would provide to the individual.
Later, in an interactive session, students raised doubts and concerns about career paths. Career guidance expert V. Levakumar also addressed the students.
Students from Classes 9 to 12, graduates looking at higher education or career opportunities, those aspiring to pursue higher education overseas, and parents of students, attended the fair. Representatives from engineering, medicine, law, hotel management, and training institutes were present at the fair to interact with students and parents on higher education and career opportunities.
AMET University, Aman Group, Garden City University, REVA University, Atria College, CII School of logistics, Jansons Institute of Technology, IIFT and Sarabhai Institute of Science & Technology were participants in the expo. The stalls put up by these institutions provided information on various courses.
