Notice to owners of ‘illegal’ quarries

They have to appear before Collector on Saturday

January 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:09 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The district administration, on Wednesday, issued notice to 34 quarry owners at Mookkunnimala, who were found to be illegal operators by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, asking them to appear before the District Collector before 5 p.m. on January 17 with licences and documents.

District Collector Biju Prabhakar said there were restrictions from the High Court on issuing closure orders to quarries who had acquired permits from the Mining and Geology, the grama panchayat, or the Pollution Control Board.

Still, the district administration, he said, would conduct a detailed investigation in the wake of the VACB report that said officials had gone out of the way to help quarries acquire permits.
