The work on the underpass constructed at Nemom across the National Highway 66 is nearing completion. However, the four-laning of the 29.2-km Karamana-Kaliyikkavila stretch, of which the underpass is a component, has been progressing slowly, mainly because of inclement weather.

The underpass, connecting the Government Upper Primary School, Nemom, and the Victory Higher Secondary School, is being constructed to facilitate the safe passage of schoolchildren. The passage is 30.2 metres long and six metres wide.

While the underpass was not part of the detailed project report (DPR) of the four-laning project, it was included later to ensure students’ safety. Crossing the busy road during peak hours is difficult for the children of the two schools.

“While the construction of the underpass has been completed, the work on the staircases, handrails and other allied facilities are yet to be undertaken. We hope to wind up works in a few weeks if the rain stays away,” a senior official of the Public Works Department said.

Many hurdles

Meanwhile, the widening of the first reach of the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila stretch, from Karamana to Pravachambalam, is facing many hindrances. While the protective walls of either side of the road have been constructed, nearly 500 metres of the 5.5-km reach is yet to be developed. Though the road has been built, tarring remains to be done on this portion. The work has stalled primarily because of the recent heavy downpour.

Also, the construction of the median along the first reach, a contentious issue, has also affected the progress of the project. Officials have been forced to defer construction at points where sections of the public have been demanding openings. “The issue will have to be resolved at a higher level. A decision can be expected only after the civic body polls,” the official added.
