Sees ‘desperation’ to cling to office

Swami Agnivesh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to desist from making statements that will lower the dignity of his office.

Referring to the observations of Mr. Modi during his recent visit to the State, Swami Agnivesh said in a statement here on Thursday that out of his spiritual concern and sense of duty as a citizen of a secular, democratic republic, he had participated in the debates that came up in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict removing restrictions on entry of women of all ages to Sabarimala.

He has declared solidarity with the State government to implement the order, which is the sole option left before it. Mr. Modi, during his visit, had launched a virulent attack against the government, ‘belittling his duty to abide by the rule of law’.

Administrative impropriety

The Prime Minister, on an official visit to a State, conducting himself as a party enthusiast and discrediting the principal opponent of his party on the mere pretext that the government chose to implement a Supreme Court order, was the height of administrative impropriety, he said.

“He is conducting himself like this out of the desperation to cling to office, but his needs and the ambitions of the BJP cannot take precedence over national interests and constitutional norms,” he said.
