March against quarrying

January 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Mookkunnimala Samrakshana Samithi, which on Monday celebrated one year of its agitation to get the quarries in the Mookkunnimala region closed, took out a march to the Pallichal village office here on Wednesday and staged a sit-in.

The march saw the villagers rally behind the Samithi to demand distribution of land encroached by quarries to the landless and poor labourers in the area. They demanded immediate closure of quarries that have been denuding the hills in the region. The day saw commencement of a total station survey by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau to quantify the quarrying in the hills and to assess the loss suffered due to this.
