Kerala University Staff Union meet

Sudheeran’s word of caution on VCs’ selection

April 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

More care needs to be taken in selecting vice chancellors of universities, KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 42{+n}{+d}annual conference of the Kerala University Staff Union here on Wednesday. A university’s performance depends on its head, the vice chancellor. Therefore, great care needs to be taken while selecting persons for the post, he said.

All universities in the State are grappling with staff shortage. In the University of Kerala the situation is particularly bad. The government has taken steps to bring under PSC staff recruitment to universities. It is expected that by August-September new staff would report for duty at the university.

The present UDF government is known for its employee-friendliness. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had declared that there would be a pay revision for the employees even before employees’ organisations raised such a demand. In fact those who were preparing to agitate on account of expected shortcomings in the announcement of pay revision were sorely disappointed, he added. Union president D. Sreekumar and general secretary K. S. Gireesakumar were present on the occasion.
