RailRadar GPS, a train-tracking platform to track and display real-time movement of trains in the railway network on Google Maps, has been launched.
Passengers can track and display on their smartphones the real-time movement of any train in the railway network.
Earlier attempts to install GPS on trains had failed due to prohibitive cost.
The real-time train-tracking pilot project was scrapped after being launched on about 40 premium trains.
Smartphone
RailRadar GPS determines the location by analysing the pattern of locations transmitted by smartphone travellers on the train.
The same approach is used by Google Maps to determine the traffic on the road.
Trains running on time will be displayed in green icons, while those running late will be indicated in red.
Users can click the train name from the map or search by train number.
“The crowd-sourced model employed uses mathematical modelling to confirm the train and its location.
It reduces human errors and it will be available 24x7 under all weather conditions, irrespective of fog or visibility issues,” says Manish Rathi, CEO and co-founder, RailYatri.in, the technology start-up that launched the platform.
To use the facility, the commuters have to visit www.railyatri.in and track the train on Google Maps.
