Flak for leadership at CPI(M) meet

District meet concludes discussion on organisation report

The three-day CPI(M) district conference, which began at Attingal on Thursday, concluded its discussion on the organisational report on Friday, but not before several delegates came down heavily on the State and district leadership over a host of issues.

While the State leadership came in for criticism for the way it had organised various agitations against the Oommen Chandy government, particularly that over the solar scam and the bar bribery charges, the district leadership was accused of having taken partisan position when handling issues in several parts of the district.

Some of the delegates also cautioned the leadership against the attempts being made by the BJP to expand its sphere of influence in the district and urged it to handle issues sensitively to avoid further disintegration of local units of the party. Particular mention was made of the exit of former party MLA R. Selvaraj, who went on to win the Neyyattinkara Assembly seat in a by-election after quitting the party.

Replying to the discussion, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the party was firm in its campaign against Finance Minister K.M. Mani. He also informed the delegates that the party had censured Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan for his public statement on the vandalising of the bust of P. Krishna Pillai.

The district conference will conclude on Saturday after electing a new district committee.

While some new faces are certain to find their way into the committee, there is unlikely to be any change of guard at the helm as incumbent district secretary Kadamkampally Surendran has completed only two terms and can hold office for one more term.
