International Day of Older Persons was observed across the State on Tuesday under the aegis of the Senior Citizens Service Council.
The day is observed to acknowledge the contributions and knowledge of the elderly and bring the needs and challenges faced by them to the notice of governments and societies. The United Nations has declared ‘The journey to age equality’ to be the theme of this year’s celebrations.
In the city, C. Divakaran, MLA, inaugurated a gathering of the elderly held in front of the Secretariat. Elderly above the age of 80 were honoured on the occasion.
Increasing the old-age pension to ₹3,500, free health insurance, and setting up of an elderly welfare department were among the demands raised by the Senior Citizens Service Council on the occasion.
