Detailed development plans are getting ready for 32 urban areas in the State.

The plans are being prepared as the first phase of preparation of master plans for cities and towns.

The government has approved the development plans for Paravur, Vaikom, and Thalassery. Draft plans have been published for Pala, Pathanamthitta, Changanassery, and Guruvayur. These will be finalised after receiving objections and suggestions from the public.

Work on the draft development plans for Kochi, Thiruvalla, Kollam, Malappuram, and Perumbavoor has been completed. The draft plans for other towns are targeted to be published by March next year.

Steps for preparation of master plans will be taken in consultation with town planning experts of international standing. A unified legislation for town and country planning is under consideration. The draft Bill for this has been drawn up.

The government is also looking at freeing towns of slums using funds under the Rajiv Awas Yojana.
