Even as ‘Operation Anantha’, the demolition drive of the district administration as part of flood prevention activities in the city is on in full swing, many parts of the city were inundated in heavy rain on Saturday afternoon. Most of the low-lying areas of the city including Thampanoor, Chenkalchoola, Edappazhinji, Fort, Pettah and Karikkakom were flooded.

District Collector Biju Prabhakar said that an alert was issued on Friday considering the forecast for heavy rain. Relief camps will be opened, if required. He said that the change in the flood situation as part of ‘Operation Anantha’ will be visible only when the entire work is completed and connection of drains is done. “The flow of water has improved in most canals where works have been completed. But, the flooding in the Thampanoor region will end only when all the drains are cleared and connected to Thekkenemkara and Amayizhanjan canals. ,” said Mr. Biju Prabhakar.

On Saturday, demolitions continued inside Chala, with several shops and other establishments removed along the line from Ruby Nagar to Putharikkandam Maithanam. This is the third different drainage line that is being discovered in this area.
