Defeat move to destroy open school: VS

: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has written to the Chancellor calling for his intervention to prevent the government from “destroying” the State Open School. The Education Minister is leading attempts to shift the education capital of Kerala to Malappuram. The Chief Minister is giving all possible support for this move. The behind-the-scene moves to shift out from Thiruvananthapuram the headquarters of the open school is but the latest example of this, he said.

The previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had decided to rename the open school as the State Council for Open and Lifelong Education (SCOLE). It was to have been an autonomous entity. Now it is said that the headquarters of the organisation would be decided by the general body of SCOLE, after it comes into being. Similarly, earlier decisions on the qualifications of teachers and non-teaching staff have been nullified. Such decisions were taken after being introduced in the Cabinet as out-of-agenda items.

All this is can only be seen as efforts to take the SCOLE to Malappuram and to appoint government favourites in key positions in the organisation. This should be seen as a continuation of the ‘League-isation’ of the education sector, the letter says. he Governor, who is the Chancellor, should put an end to undemocratic activities, the letter adds.
