The Thiruvananthapuram Rural police will seek the custody of a habitual offender nabbed by the Tamil Nadu Police, in connection with numerous cases of thefts reported in the district.

Manikantan, 28, of Kezharoor was arrested by the Nagercoil police in Marthandam for theft cases that were recently reported in various parts of Kanyakumari district. He is currently remanded in judicial custody.

The accused was identified to be behind nearly 15 theft cases reported from Neyyattinkara, Amaravila, Udiyankulangara and Parassala in the past few weeks. He had allegedly broken into shops after removing their roof tiles.

The police said they were able to zero in on the accused after he had made a call using a mobile phone allegedly stolen from a shop in Amaravila.

The shop’s owner had maintained records of the cellphones including their IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. Manikantan was traced to a location in Marthandam.

Efforts made by a team deployed by Superintendent of Police (Thiruvananthapuram Rural) Ashok Kumar to apprehend him in Kanyakumari coincided with those of the Nagercoil police, which managed to apprehend him and produce him in court.

Confident

The Thiruvananthapuram Rural police are confident of gaining custody of the accused in two weeks, official sources said.
