Corporation to have its own sports teams

A pool of 25 to 30 players to be formed for each sport

Aspiring sportspersons in the city will soon have one more platform to prove their mettle. The city Corporation is now planning to field its own teams in five different sporting disciplines, for various tournaments that will be organised by the Government as well as other institutions. And, unlike the typical official teams of organisations, wherein the members are drawn from within, here the field is open for the public.

The local body is planning to recruit players for its football, cricket, volleyball, handball and kabadi teams. According to Corporation officials, the initiative is part of the plans for the year under the Education and Sports Standing Committee. The target group will be youth between the ages of 16 and 30, as on January 1, 2018. “We have a large pool of youth sportspersons who often lack enough opportunities here to make use of their skills. The Corporation has been organising sports competitions as part of popular annual events like Keralotsavam. That was where this idea began. We thought that it would be great to have teams representing the local body in various tournaments,” said an official.

A pool of 25 to 30 players will be formed for each of the sporting disciplines, so that the Corporation can draw on them when the need arises.

Those interested in being part of the teams should send in their applications, including certificates to prove their age and photographs, before 5 p.m. on December 31. The applicant should be a resident of one of the hundred wards of the city Corporation. The application form is available in the Corporation website – www.corporation

oftrivandrum.in and in the Education Standing Committee’s office inside the Corporation main office. Mayor V.K.Prasanth appealed to sportspersons in the city Corporation area to make use of the opportunity.
