Complaints aplenty over ward delimitation process

June 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The State Delimitation Commission has received a flood of complaints about the draft report on redrawing the boundaries of local bodies in the State.

The commission is understood to have received about 200 complaints from Thiruvananthapuram Corporation till 4 p.m. on Monday. The deadline for submitting complaints and suggestions about the draft report expired at 5 p.m. on Monday. Commission sources told The Hindu here that the number of complaints from all over the State was likely to surpass 2,000. Unscientific bifurcation of wards, ignoring key institution in each ward, has given way to complaints from political parties, residents associations, cultural organisations and individuals.

Complaints and suggestions could either be submitted directly to the commission or the District Collectors. Considering the flood of complaints from the Corporation limit, the commission has four inquiry officers comprising two Deputy Collectors to conduct field visits to find out the anomalies and submit a report to the commission by June 17. Based on the report, the commission would take a final call on redrawing the wards. The government decision to complete the delimitation in haste had already invited criticism. The commission does not have the time to complete it in a flawless manner, the sources said.
