Coastal-erosion hit families eligible for aid

196 families to get ₹10,000 each

Nearly 200 families in the district whose houses were destroyed or damaged by coastal erosion in June and July will also be eligible for the emergency financial assistance announced by the State government for the August 2019 flood victims.

As many as 196 families, including 184 families in Thiruvananthapuram taluk and 12 in Chirayinkeezhu taluk, who were shifted to relief camps in June and July will be eligible for the assistance of ₹10,000, a government order issued last week said.

The Thiruvananthapuram district administration had initially recommended financial assistance to 202 families from the district. However, the State government selected only six families.

The rationale was that the assistance of ₹10,000, declared through an order dated August 23, was meant for victims of the natural calamities reported in August.

Originally, the district administration had handed over the details of 202 families from the district who were displaced by coastal erosion, along with their bank account details, to the Land Revenue Commissioner.

No other aid given

In a letter dated August 30, the District Collector, Thiruvananthapuram, had pointed out that the 196 families had not been issued any financial assistance so far and that they too should be considered for similar support. Ever since the onset of the southwest monsoon in June, the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram have been battered by heavy waves.

On the other hand, Thiruvananthapuram district was largely untouched by the floods and landslips which affected the central and northern districts in August. No village in Thiruvananthapuram features on the list of 1,038 villages declared by the government as affected by floods and landslips.
