CBSE plans online evaluation

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to introduce online evaluation of class X answer sheets from the upcoming board examinations in the State.

The CBSE had introduced the digital marking system of answer sheets of class X and class XII in all its other regions from last year.

“The board introduced the online marking system to minimise the scope of errors and to ensure an error-free evaluation system. We are planning to introduce the system, starting with Class X this year in our region,” Mahesh D. Dharmadhikari, Regional Officer, CBSE, told The Hindu.

Around 70,000 students were expected to take the upcoming class X examinations in the State.

Work begins

The region had started preliminary works to roll out the new evaluation process.

The schools should equip teachers in handling computers. Necessary infrastructure was also to be in place, he added.

Explaining the process, a CBSE official said after the conduct of the examinations, the answer books, in sealed covers, would be given to the software provider after fixing bar-coded stickers on it.

The process

After this, the answer sheets would be scanned and put in the computer for evaluation by the trained teachers, the official added.

Kerala Sahodaya School Complex State president S. Jyothis Chandran said, besides ensuring error-free evaluation, the new system would also ensure speedy completion of the valuation process.

“In terms of totalling and revaluation too the system has its advantage. The online marking will rule out the possibility of wrong totalling as the system will reject evaluation in case of wrong totalling. If one question is left unmarked, evaluators cannot move to the next section. Also, students can see the answer sheets while applying for revaluation,” he said.
