The city Corporation’s pre-monsoon clean-up of the Amayizhanjan canal began here on Saturday.

Culture Minister Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the clean-up near Kannammoola in the morning. He said it took humongous effort to remove the waste and silt accumulated over years from the canal.

Funds

The funds for these activities would be utilised from the ₹25 crore earlier allocated for Amayizhanjan canal improvement purposes. The government would take up these activities to ensure the natural flow of water in the canal, he said.

Mayor V.K. Prashant said the Corporation would carry out the immediate clean-up in the canal to prevent flooding in Kannammoola and nearby areas.

More than 800 people, including 540 sanitation workers of the Corporation, 80 employees, and more than 200 volunteers were involved in the clean-up on Saturday. Two JCBs, six tipper lorries, 25 pick-up auto rickshaws and other machineries were used in the operations. As many as 25 loads of waste were removed.

The clean-up programmes will continue in the coming days too.
