The Colachel Stadium at the Pangode Military Station here bustled with excitement on Tuesday as school students made the most of the opportunity to watch military-grade weapons at close quarters.
Students from schools in the city made a beeline for the educative display of various military weapons and equipments that was organised to commemorate the 70{+t}{+h}Independence Day.
The major attractions at the exhibition included the Kalashnikov 7.62 mm AK-47 rifle, Swedish-made 84 mm Rocket Launcher, 40-mm Multiple Grenade Launcher, and NMM14 and M16 Anti-Personnel (AP) Mines. The military personnel explained in detail the handling of the weapons, loading of ammunition, and the different situations for which the equipment were used.
Among the other items displayed included binoculars, camouflage clothing, and vehicles that were used by Army personnel for various operations.
Annual event
According to the organisers, the annual event is intended to provide a glimpse into the activities of military personnel and create an interest among youngsters in joining the Indian Armed Forces.
A visibly-thrilled Nakshatra Sreelal, a student of Saraswathi Vidyalaya, said that the experience was a memorable one. “I’ve always yearned to understand the life of soldiers from close quarters. The exhibition has instilled a confidence in me to join the armed forces and serve the country,” she said.
There were others who felt that the opportunity will go a long way in assisting them in their academic pursuits.
“We have been taught the principle behind the recoil systems. The exhibition provided us first-hand experience of the practical application of the theory. I’ve been fascinated with the operation of weapons,” says Anteys, a ninth-grade student of Army Public School.
The gathering was also treated to an impressive Military Pipe Band display by the Madras Regiment and motivational documentaries.
