Livestock show, food fete to be held in capital city

A national livestock show and food festival will be held at the Kanakakkunnu Palace here from July 23 to 27.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran said here on Friday that the programme would feature exhibitions of cattle from different States, pet birds and ornamental fishes; cultural pageantry; gaja (elephant) mela and calf rally; and seminars; besides the festival of culinary delights, including local dishes. There would also be dance and music programme by well-known artists every day.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would inaugurate the festival at a function to be attended by Union and State ministers, including ministers from other States. Various institutions, government agencies, non-governmental agencies, banks and companies would participate in the exhibitions and other programmes, which were being jointly organised by departments under him, Mr. Divakaran said.

He said the main objective of the programme was to create awareness of the achievements and activities of various departments of the government. It was also aimed at ensuring public participation in various programmes of the government and create love and affection towards animals and birds.

Earlier, Mr. Divakaran and Thiruvananthapuram Mayor C. Jayan Babu, respectively, released the logo and the brochure of the festival. District panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan inaugurated its web site.
