Hunger-free City, a programme being implemented by the Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM) in Kozhikode, Kollam and Malappuram districts, is being launched in the capital city too.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will launch the programme on the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) campus on Tuesday. Minister for Social Welfare M.K. Muneer, Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob will be present.
Under the programme, about 2,500 in-patients of the MCH and SAT Hospital will be provided free lunch on a daily basis.
In the capital, the Department of Prisons is joining hands with the KSSM to implement the project. The food will be taken to the hospital with the help of NGOs, NSS volunteers and student police cadets and the distribution will have to be taken up by the Health officials. The KSSM will pay Rs.20 per lunch to the Prisons Department. The KSSM estimates an expenditure of Rs.50,000 per day for the project and has earmarked an annual allocation of Rs.1.8 crore for the project here. The KSSM hopes that the project could be extended to feed patients in other hospitals in the city as well as those roaming the streets.
