Connoisseurs of history will soon have two spots to visit in the city, one in the form of a memorial to the freedom fighters from the State and the other, a museum depicting the Freedom Struggle and the role of freedom fighters from the State in it.
Both are slated to come up at Vattiyurkavu and the project report for the memorial has already been approved by the State government with an in-principle decision taken to allot 10 cents of land near the spot at Vattiyurkavu where the first State Congress conference, which spearheaded the Freedom Movement in Travancore, was held.
S. Raimon, Special Officer for the projects, said the memorial was expected to cost about Rs.1 crore, depending on the design. As for the museum, the project report was under preparation and was expected to be ready within three months.
Research centre
A research centre on the freedom movement too would come up along with the museum, which would require about two to three acres of land. The government was yet to decide on the land and was expected to do so once the project report was ready.
The museum was expected to have all available visuals and documentations of the freedom movement, details of the freedom fighters and much more, apart from offering history lovers a chance to study the struggle in detail at the research centre.
Entries invited
Meanwhile, the museum authorities have invited entries for design sketches for the proposed memorial as part of a competition for the same. The sketches have to be submitted on art paper and on CD to the Special Officer, Freedom Struggle History Museum, Park View, Thiruvananthapuram-33 before December 15. The best sketches will be selected and the designers given prizes. Details are available on ph: (0471) 232 0231.
