Women to head 28 GPs in Mangaluru taluk

Women will head 51 per cent gram panchayats in Mangaluru taluk.

The reservation for the posts of presidents and vice-presidents of 55 gram panchayats, in the taluk, for which elections were conducted on May 29, were announced here on Monday.

Both the presidents and vice-presidents elected would enjoy five years in office.

Of the total 55 panchayats, women would head 28 gram panchayats (51 per cent).

It included 16 under general category (woman) and 12 under Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Class A and B categories.

The reservations were decided in the presence of elected members of the panchayats of the taluk in the office of the zilla panchayat.

Of the total panchayats, 16 posts of presidents have been reserved for general category.

As the reservations have been announced, hectic parleys would begin among members to make it to the top post.
