New president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy M. Janaki Brahmavar said here on Thursday that the academy will continue opening Tulu associations in schools and colleges.

She said that earlier some associations had been opened in educational institutions under the initiative of the academy. Tulu Koota of Udupi suggested opening more such associations.

She said that if Tulu and the culture associated with it were to survive, Tulu had to be in circulation through various activities. Associations in schools and colleges would ensure that the language sustained.

She said that 40 per cent of the construction of Tulu Bhavan near Urwa Stores had been completed. Of the Rs. 4.8 crore project, Rs. 3 crore had been spent so far.

To a question, the president said that now she was translating Smashana Kurukshetra, a play by Kuvempu to Tulu. Devendra Pejathaya of Udupi was writing a Tulu Mahabharata. It would be a voluminous work, she said.

Ms. Janaki said that she and members of the academy took charge on March 1.
