Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake said here on Friday that staff shortage had delayed the creation of zones within the Mangaluru City Corporation for better administration.
He told presspersons that the process of appointing staff to the sanctioned posts was under progress. Zones would be created after appointing staff.
It may be mentioned here that as per the cadre and recruitment rules for staff of city corporations which came into effect from 2011-12, corporations should form zones for effective administration. With regard to the Mangaluru City Corporation, of the three sanctioned posts of zonal commissioners two are vacant now.
It was planned to open a zonal office in the city corporation building at Lalbagh while the second zonal office would come up at Mallikatta and the third at Surathkal. The zonal commissioner in each zone would be assisted by a development officer (assistant executive engineer – civil), a revenue officer and an assistant revenue officer, an environment engineer, four assistant engineers for civil, electrical, water supply and underground drainage works. In addition there will be other supporting staff.
To a question the Minister said that earlier the State government had requested the Union government to include Mangaluru in its smart city project. In a meeting with the Union government sometime ago, it was requested to include Mangaluru in the project under the categories of port cities. But the Union government is yet to send clear guidelines on the project.
