Forensic Scientist and Former Director of Tamil Nadu Forensic Science Department P. Chandra Sekharan has asked atomic scientists to come forward and alleviate fears of local residents about the 2,000 MW Kundankulam atomic plant in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Chandra Sekharan, who was among the two members who studied the project at the inception stage, said the atomic scientists should alleviate the fear psychosis of the residents and prevent politicisation of the issue.
Mr. Sekharan said safety of the atomic plant and the concerns of the affected people were important and needed to be addressed. “But opposing the very project itself will certainly jeopardise the progress of the country,” he told The Hindu over telephone from Bangalore.
Mr. Sekharan said protests were held when the Kundankulam project was initiated by the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1988. He was a part of the two-member team that studied the project and submitted a report to the then Chief Minister.
