Officials seek funds for developing roads, building jetties in Dakshina Kannada

Funds for improving road infrastructure in the district and construction of 13 jetties in Mangaluru were among the proposals made during the pre-budget meeting chaired by District in-charge Minister U.T. Khader here recently.

Mr. Khader had called the heads of district units of various departments, industry representatives, fishermen, and other stakeholders to discuss proposals about the district that need to figure in the budget.

District in-charge secretary V. Ponnuraj, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S., and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer R. Selvamani attended the meeting.

While expressing the need for funds to develop three major ghat sections and roads connecting religious places in district, Public Works Department officials sought ₹30 crore for constructing minor bridges and road repair works.

Mr. Senthil said district administration will give priority to construct bridges for schools that are likely to be affected during rainy season.

Mr. Senthil said 13 jetties will be constructed between Kuloor bridge and the Nethravati that will help to promote tourism.

Mr. Khader asked officials to consider developing the riverfront in Harekala. The Minister said he will work to get necessary clearances to develop Sasihiltu beach as a surfing zone.

An official from the Airports Authority of India sought 36 acres of land to develop Mangaluru International Airport.

Representatives from the Small-scale Industries Association sought funds for improvement of roads, basic facilities, and the drainage system in Baikampady industrial estate.

Mr. Khader said he will seek funds for developing waterways for fishing harbour and fishmills.
