Valerian Rodrigues, a 54-year-old resident of Bishop Victor Road, has filed a private complaint accusing the former Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader B. Nagaraj Shetty of cheating. This complaint filed before the second Judicial Magistrate First Class Court had been referred to Mangalore East Police for investigation.

In the complaint filed before the second JMFC Court, Mr. Rodrigues has claimed that he gave Mr. Shetty, who is the Managing Partner of Premier Homes firm, a hand loan of Rs. 10 lakh in January 2011 . Mr. Shetty, he said, had agreed to return the money within a month. Following delay in payment, Mr. Shetty gave him six post-dated cheques, which were dishonoured.

Following directions of the second JMFC Court, the Mangalore East police registered a complaint for offence under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code on December 13.

Denying allegation of cheating, Mr. Shetty said he did not know Mr. Rodrigues and had not taken any loan from him. Mr. Shetty told The Hindu that he had not been involved in the affairs of Premier Homes Firm for over 15 years.
