MBBS students will help run PHCs for 12 hours: Khader

Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader said here on Wednesday that the government has proposed to make primary health centres (PHCs) function for 12 hours from 8 a.m. by utilising the services of MBBS students available from this year. Now PHCs function from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The availability of MBBS students for rural service will help labourers and other working class people in rural areas, as they can visit PHCs till 8 p.m., he said.

Speaking to media, Mr. Khader said with the Karnataka Compulsory Service Training by Candidates Completed Medical Courses Act, 2012 coming into effect this year, services of as many as 6,675 MBBS students, 2,988 postgraduate students and 195 persons pursuing their super speciality courses will be available.

Mr. Khader said they are considering posting two MBBS students for each of the 2,355 PHCs in the State.
